Boston Calling kicked off its sixth edition of the three day, 23 artists festival last night at City Hall Plaza and it was spectacular. People were calling it “folk night,” since the line up consisted of Gregory Alan Isakov, Of Monsters and Men, who performed at the inaugural BC during May 2013, and The Avett Brothers, who…

Singer/songwriter Angéline was originally from Loire Atlantique in France but is now based out of London, which is where she earned her music degree. Although most of her songs are now in English, there’s clearly a French folk music influence to her sound. Additionally, she’d just visited Cuba — she loves Salsa dancing — and…

I love Natalie Prass. Her self-titled debut, released earlier this year, is a fine example of how to do folk pop perfectly. If you’re a fan of Jenny Lewis, I think you’d love her, too. Their songwriting and vocal styles are similar enough that if you like one you should like the other.

And since that debut, the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter has become something of a folk god, amassing a legion of loyal followers. His songs have also been placed in more than a few TV shows. Whether you’re looking for a…

I’ve been a fan of Emmy The Great for a long time and have been itching for her to release new music lately so imagine how excited I was when I received an e-mail about this track today. And, I must say, it’s probably my favorite track she’s ever done already. I literally can’t stop…

Ben Ottewell, vocalist and lead guitarist of Brit rock band Gomez, continues to submerge himself in the deep end of the blues on his second solo release, Rattlebag, which follows his first solo album Shapes & Shadows (2011). “Your prayers won’t raise me from this web,” Ottewell sings during the title track, “Rattlebag,” which opens…

“Timber” is the latest track to be unleashed from Eaves’ debut EP, As Old As The Grave, and if you like melancholic singer/songwriter fare then you’re in for a real treat. From the first few stark piano notes, it’s obvious that this is going to be a haunting number, and the emotional gravity is felt…
