#songoftheday / NEWS / REVIEW: METALLICA: “LORDS OF SUMMER” (THE GLITCH MOB REMIX)

“Lords of summer shall return,” proclaims Metallica’s James Hetfield right at the beginning of The Glitch Mob’s remix of Metallica’s new song “Lords of Summer,” which will be X Games Austin’s official anthem this year.  Oddly enough, this remix is being released prior to the release of the normal version of the song.  But that makes sense somehow because when you listen to it, it makes you really, really want to hear the original.  So, the remix is a great way of getting people excited about Metallica’s version.  The downside is that this remix is phenomenal, so Metallica’s version has a lot to live up to.  One wonders how their drum beats can possibly pack the punch and level of bass that The Glitch Mob’s version delivers.  Granted, Lars knows how to kick some ass, but when it comes to punchy bass, EDM is kicking metal’s ass lately.  And The Glitch Mob are the gods of their scene, their music bursting with excitement and aggression.  If you’re looking for music to keep you awake when you need to stay up late some night, listen to this one on repeat because it’s audible caffeine — or something stronger.

PRESS RELEASE:

June 4th through 7th, electronic/rock trio The Glitch Mob will be headlining at X Games Austin 2015 alongside Nicki Minaj and recently-announced headliners Metallica. To prepare the masses for this titanic clash of music and action sports, The Glitch Mob have just released a fiery remix of Metallica’s “Lords of Summer,” which is being used as X Games Austin 2015’s official anthem and is featured in the ad campaign for the event that launched this week. It will also be integrated into the ABC and ESPN telecasts and The Glitch Mob’s Sunday performance at Circuit of The Americas.

The Glitch Mob have remixed the song in headbanging electro style, creating a fitting homage that retains a definite metal/hard rock influence. Stream the remix via Soundcloud and grab a free download.

“Metallica is one of the greatest, heaviest, and most significant bands of all time. They defined heavy music as we know it today,” said The Glitch Mob. “We listened to their catalog religiously. “And Justice For All” is one of the greatest albums ever—it has an immersive narrative, deep emotion, and gnarly power. Our mission has always been to bring that same raw energy into our own electronic music. It was a true honor to remix Metallica: to collaborate with our heroes.”

The trio has also announced a string of spring and summer tour dates, including festival appearances at Sasquatch, Electric Zoo, and Northcoast, co-headlining California shows with Chromeo at Santa Barbara Bowl and Berkeley’s legendary Greek Theater, and performances at both HARD Red Rocks and HARD Summer, as well as several one-off shows. All dates are listed below, and keep an eye out for more special announcements coming soon.
