Once in a while a video comes along that truly fits the song and what you have is something truly brilliant that actually elevates the song in listener’s minds with the images it fills their heads with. This is one of those videos. I really don’t think they could have done a better video for this song. It’s dark and kind of edgy, like the song itself, and it’s never too flashy in any over the top way. It’s not one of those videos where they have all kinds of stunts and special effects so they can justify a 5 million dollar budget. Whoever directed this video was definitely in synch with The Weeknd and what they’ve created here is fantastic.
To be perfectly honest, I’m not a big fan of music videos. I like to use my own imagination when it comes to what I think about when I listen to songs. I don’t need videos to tell me what to imagine when I’m listening to my music. That’s how it was in the ’80’s and early ’90’s when MTV still played videos and I came to resent it. It just reached a point where I had to stop watching videos so that I could actually appreciate the music more and simply react to the music without a video flooding my head with ideas that often seemed to really have nothing to do with the song. Suffice to say that I often regret it when I watch music videos. But this one? I’m going to watch it again. And probably again after that. An instant classic.
