The Weeknd has never put out a disappointing single before, but the last couple didn’t quite grab me in the way that his earlier mixtapes did. I was in like with them, not in love. But his new single, “The Hills,” is quite possibly his best song ever. Huge, sonorous beats threaten to blow your subwoofer while they refuse to decide whether to be R&B or trip-hop. Generally, I’d describe The Weeknd as dark if not eerie R&B. But “The Hills” reminds me more of Tricky and Massive Attack than any R&B artists I’ve ever heard. And that is precisely while it’s so awesome. The Weeknd’s silky voice glides over these sort of beats so, so well. Get ready — your jaw is about to drop.
