Estelle has never been boring, but this futuristic song is otherworldly good! With punchy beats reminiscent of Kelis’ “Milkshake” and many NERD tracks, you’ve got lots of lovely bass pounding away, giving your subwoofers a workout. Or making you glad you bought those Beats headphones. And if you’ve got shitty speakers, listen to this one at your own risk — it just might blow the suckers. But there’s more to the production than just the beats, like lots of finger snaps, odd little backing vocals, occasional computer blips, etc. It’s kind of like “Milkshake” meets “Royals,” remixed by Pharrell.
We’ve always loved Estelle’s soulful voice, but here she does some spoken word as well as singing and the combo is more than a little arresting, commanding your full attention at all times. Everything about this song is just perfect. What do you think?
BTW, this video version of the song seems to be a clean version. Listen to the explicit version on Spotify in you dare; it’s pretty raunchy: Estelle – Make Her Say (Beat It Up)
