“Baby Don’t Lie” isn’t bad, but it sounds more like a No Doubt song than a Gwen Stefani solo song. And we’ve actually liked her solo stuff more than No Doubt. So, we’re hoping that her album sounds more unique. We need more songs like “What Are You Waiting For” and “Wind It Up,” ya know? Mind you, we don’t think she should just try to re-create those songs. That’s not what we’re saying. We simply want her to go to that wildly imaginative place she went to when she wrote her two solo albums. Those were so original, bursting with contagious creativity along with their magnificent hooks. The bottom line? Anybody could have come up with a song like this. It’s not terrible, but it’s no tube of wonderful either. Listen to it today and chances are you’ll have forgotten all about it by tomorrow.
