Wow. This song resonates with me big time. There have been quite a few songs about the ’80’s and ’90’s during the past couple of years, but most of them have only gotten it half right. They’d drop a few good references but then most of the song would be really generic, making me wonder if they were even alive when those things were hip. Well, I’m not sure Owl City was alive during ’80’s and ’90’s, but I know Hanson sure were and this song is beaming with great references from start to finish. Nintendo, VHS, G.I. Joes… and the list goes on. But that’s just one reason to love this. The main reason is that it’s a wonderful burst of sweet pop goodness, as addictive as Pop Rocks, Chicklets and Fruit Stripes candy/gum! I’m literally listening to it for the fourth time in a row as I write this and I’m not the least bit tired of it yet. It’s wicked awesome, as we say in Massachusetts. And major props go to Owl City for recruiting a proper ’90’s band to join him on the track. The Hanson guys have great voices, and have actually matured into a fantastic pop rock band, and hopefully more people will check out their new stuff after hearing this tube-full of joy.
And I also have to praise the video. It’s highly adorable and it manages to drop even more ’80’s references than the song itself, so cheers to Ryan Maloney, who directed it.
