If the name Tori Kelly sounds familiar it’s probably because she was briefly on American Idol when she was sixteen, but before that she became an internet sensation when she started posting videos of herself performing songs on Youtube when she was just 14. In 2012, she released her first EP, Handmade Songs By Tori Kelly, which she wrote, produced and even mixed. It caught the attention of Capitol Records, who signed her and soon after released her second EP, Foreword. Then she faded into the background a bit while working on her debut full-length release, Unbreakable Smile, which will be released tomorrow on June 23rd, 2015.
Pop junkies must check out her contagious single, “Should’ve Been Us,” above. It’s as passionate as a punchy pop song could possibly be and it has an immediacy to it that lets it sink its hooks deep inside of you where they trigger your brain to produce massive amounts of dopamine, putting you in a state of blissful euphoria as you jump up and down in synch with the beats. And her vocals, well, she can certainly sing, her voice bursting with character, smokey in the best way possible but without being raspy at all. It’s a voice I can’t wait to hear more from and chances are you’ll be jazzed about it, too, by the time you’ve finished listening to “Should’ve Been Us” above.
