#songoftheday / VIDEO: Deluka – “Home” [Acoustic Version]

Often, when you get an acoustic version of a pop song it simply consists of the singer’s voice and an acoustic guitar.  And we love those sort of laid-back, sitting around the campfire tracks.  (I especially love listening to them on my sleepy-time playlists.)  But, sometimes, an acoustic version will be bigger than just a singer and an acoustic guitar.  Deluka’s new acoustic version of their recent single “Home” is one such song.  In fact, its sound is so vibrant and lush that you might think they just took the original version and layered acoustic guitars over it.  Of course, that’s not what they actually did, but this is one acoustic version that loses nothing and gains everything.  For starters, it still has a beat.  But where the original version sounds like it has live drums, the acoustic version seems to have a looped beat (or maybe we’re just thinking that because we don’t see anyone playing drums in the video).  In any case, it’s got something of a glam rock stomp about it, to which end it’s pretty massive and seductive.  Meanwhile, the song still has keyboards, they just don’t radiate quite so much, leaving room for the acoustic guitars, which are pretty glimmering in their own right.  And, perhaps best of all, this version has all of that and still leaves lots of room for Ellie Innocenti’s vocals to blossom, revealing textures and nuances you might not have noticed with everything going on during the original version.  So, which version is better?  We’re going to remain undecided, enjoying both versions equally.
