#songoftheday = VALERIE RENAY: “PEEL THE SKIN”

by Michael McCarthy

Longtime readers of Love is Pop will know Valerie Renay as one half of the mesmerizing Berlin duo Noblesse Oblige. Valerie has now released a new solo single entitled “Peel The Skin.” It’s something of a genre bender but if we had to assign it one, it would have to be trip-hop, the intoxicating song bridging the gap between vintage Tricky and the darker side of Morcheeba. It’s her first collaboration with producer Aka-E, who co-wrote, along with additional production from Sebastian Lee Philipp of Die Wilde Jagd and her former music partner in Noblesse Oblige.

Valerie certainly never fails to impress us, but I can honestly say that I think this is her best work so far. Everything about the track is absolutely perfect. From her ethereal vocals that work their way into your ears and move your soul to the brilliant production, music just doesn’t get any better than this. If you’re a fan of Massive Attack, you’ll be blown away by this gem of a song.

Lyrics:

Peel the skin of my bones, to hold you closer
Scratch the stains of my soul, like paint on the wall
The whisper gets louder, the world is collapsing
In my dreams I am stronger, in your eyes I am… nothing

In your arms I am breathing, revolution is starting
For my freedom I’m fighting, reflexion is power
All your rules to be broken, control is defeated
My belief is my anchor, your kisses make me stronger.

They make me…. stronger
