Vanessa Carlton has been a piano pop sort of singer/songwriter for a long time now, but somehow her beautiful new song “Blue Pool” sounds very different from her previous music. Perhaps it’s the production, as the song sounds like it was recorded outside, which gives the vocals a spacious quality. It also sounds as though it was recorded live in one take, Vanessa playing the piano as she sang it. As she says in the quote below, it’s “minimalist.” However it was recorded, it sounds wonderful, the swirling piano enveloping her sun-kissed vocals splendidly, spinning quite the charming song.

The full length album (that will contain all the songs on the Blue Pool EP), Liberman, will be released in late October.
“This whole album is paired down and minimalist and this song is an example of how you can turn a traditional piano vocal song into something else,” says Vanessa. “Also I’m a big Philip Glass fan and I love how Steve Osborne (Liberman producer & mixer) was able to turn my swirly piano part at the end into this slippery sounding kaleidoscope.”
