#songoftheday / REVIEW: The-Dream – “Throw It Back”

Well, you can call me a hypocrite today because this gorgeous number by The-Dream  has a shitload of auto-tune and I actually love it.  Is it my favorite thing about this song?  No.  But it does help make it the precious mix of R&B and hip-hop that it is.

If I must compare it to another song I’d have to go with Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” as The-Dream does more singing here than rapping.  But at the same time “Throw It Back” is pretty different from the Drake classic. For one thing, it has livelier beats that will have you feeling as though you’ve just swallowed a handful of jumping beans.  Not that you’ll mind — these beats are catchy, too, worming their way deep into your ears where only the loudest bass ever dares to go.  As for The-Dream’s singing, it’s not perfect, but the auto-tune smooths it out nicely and the result is not unlike Kanye’s singing voice.  At times it even calls to mind The Weeknd.

I can see this one becoming a big hit.  It has everything pop and urban radio like right now.
