We receive quite a few tweets recommending various songs for #songoftheday, but it’s not very often that we’re particularly impressed by what people are suggesting. “Blackbird” by the duo On Dead Waves (Polly Scattergood and James Chapman) is an exception. We checked this one out at the suggestion of @linkoni on Twitter and were immediately mesmerized by the song, which is not a cover of The Beatles song of the same name, though it is equally beautiful. “I’ve got a big black bird in my bedroom / He keeps on singing to me / He says you will not believe / The shit I have seen,” begins the first verse, Scattergood’s ethereal vocals splitting the difference between Lana Del Rey and Julia Stone. We could listen to her voice for hours and hours, it’s so enchanting; you feel like a spell is being cast on you as you sing it. At the very least, it will give you chills. And the chorus comes on like a painkiller kicking in as she sings, “My dreams are like summer / And yours are like spring / Let’s sleep until sunrise / Sing blackbird sing.” Suffice to say their forthcoming album is now one of the records we’re most looking forward to this year.
NOTE: This post has been edited, as we did not know if On Dead Waves was a group, duo or solo artist at the time we originally posted this. Imagine our surprise when it turned out that the singer is none other than Polly Scattergood, whose album Arrows was our number one album of 2013! No wonder we were immediately attracted to the voice here.
