Last month I interviewed Whitney Fenimore, a former contestant of The Voice from season 13. Her single at the time was “Find Your Love,” a sweeping, almost ethereal ballad that blows across your skin like a cool breeze on a hot day. Her new single, “Stones,” is a veritable stomper that reminds me of Larkin Poe’s brand of alt-country, alt-country being the subgenre that most consider Whitney’s music to be. I didn’t really hear any country in “Find Your Love,” but listening to “Stones,” I can see why people would say that. The beats, guitars and piano remind me of country music before it turned into bubblegum pop. However, I would still call Whitney’s music alt-pop or indie pop. Not bubblegum pop, however. Not that it matters what I call it. Or what anyone calls it. Regardless of any words a music journalist might choose to churn out, “Stones” is, well, solid as a rock. Grade A stuff. I hope you’re listening to it right now as you read this. If not, hey, you’re missing out on something special.
You’re in for a real treat when her EP Battle Within drops on May 18th.
