To tell you the truth, I’ve never cared for Incubus. I know it’s difficult to imagine anyone living through the 00’s not liking them, but to me they were like Pearl Jam in the 90’s: boring. Yeah, I know you’re supposed to like Pearl Jam but they’ve never grabbed me. Probably because I don’t like Eddie Vedder’s voice. With Incubus, it wasn’t the voice but their whole sound in general that failed to do anything for me. But here we are in 2015 and they’ve released a new single, “Absolution Calling,” and I quite like it. It’s not quite what I’d call catchy, but there’s something smooth about it, something pleasant. I think it has more in common with Interpol than the Incubus of ’99 and that’s a good thing in my book. Clearly, these guys have continued to listen to new music and grow as artists, unlike some artists who just keep trying to rewrite their first two albums. And I say good for them. So, whether you’ve always liked them, or whether you’ve always hated them, you’ll probably like this song.
