The thing that makes Laure Shang one of my favorite Chinese artists is that you never know what she’s going to do next. You really don’t. In fact, I dare say she’s one of the most unpredictable artists on the planet, which, for me, also makes her one of the most fascinating artists, too. At some point or another, Laure has made just about every type of music you can imagine. Some of it is very positive and uplifting pop while she’s also gone through periods where she was so dark and lurid — not to mention experimental — that you’d swear she was a Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga hybrid. Aside from making just about every type of music you possibly can, she also sings in three different languages, English, French and Chinese. And she speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese on top of that.
Laure’s new single — the third from her forthcoming (still untitled) next album — is called “That Bra” and it’s about, well, hating her bra. Among other things. “One thing you should know, I’ll never be a perfect bitch,” she sing-speaks during the almost funky electro-pop gem with its middle finger in the air. You could call it a feminist anthem and you wouldn’t be wrong. The song’s production reminds me of Marshmello, one of the hottest electronic music producers right now. (He produced Selena Gomez’s new song “Wolves.”) Big beats with a lot of bass. Can’t go wrong with that. Especially not when Laure is at the helm.
Before each album Laure releases, it’s like she goes into a cocoon and emerges as a brand new type of butterfly. I don’t know what type she’ll be on her next album just yet, but if the singles so far are any indication it’ll be some type that’s poisonous to the touch and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
