This Friday night, June 17th, Kristin Kontrol will be playing The Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub located at 472-480 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139. If her name doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps you’ll recall her as Dee Dee from the popular rock band Dum Dum Girls, which she was lead vocalist for during the past several years.
Recently, Kristin — that’s her real name — decided it was time for a change and subsequently dissolved Dum Dum Girls so she could forge ahead 100% committed to her new music, which is more in the pop vein yet also considerably darker. It was a big risk, but she simply had to follow her heart and make the music that was in her head.
When I heard that Dee Dee from Dum Dum Girls was doing a pop album I feared she was headed for a disaster, as it was simply difficult to imagine what a pop album from her might sound like. You shouldn’t have any reservations, however. As it turns out, it’s one of the year’s best pop records so far, albeit one that’s likely too gloomy and downbeat to get on mainstream pop radio. That said, these are tunes with sonorous beats that would be perfect for dancing. Tracks like “Skin Shed,” “X-Communicate” and “Show Me” are high octane, four on the floor killers of a most contagious variety. All 10 of the album’s tracks could be released as a single — they’re that damn good. So, one can only assume that her live performance will be bursting with kinetic energy that’s sure to have the crowd singing and dancing along.
