If you like violent movies, you have to see the Korean movie Project Wolf Hunting. Rated NC 17 just for violence. Basically, a bunch of criminals are being extradited from Korea and they’re sending them back via a cargo ship because another method was tried previously and there was a problem. So you have dozens of the worst criminals to ever live on board this gigantic ship with dozens of cops. And all hell breaks loose. But what starts off as something like a normal suspense thriller or crime movie eventually morphs into something of a different genre entirely. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it brilliant but I’d definitely give it an A. If you like gore and violence, you’ll absolutely love it. I’m not saying you should watch it because it’s a bloodbath but I’m not not saying you should watch it just because it’s a bloodbath either. It makes the violence in Quentin Tarantino’s movies look like PG rated Disney stuff, that’s how extremely violent it is.
I had never heard of this movie from 2022. I only happened to decide to watch it because Korean actress Jung So Min is in it and I’m trying to see everything she’s ever done that I can find. But even if she wasn’t in it, I still would’ve loved it. It’s kind of like what a big Michael Bay Hollywood movie would be if it was super violent and not trying to get a PG 13 rating. It starts off a little slow as people are boarding the ship and they’re setting the proverbial stage, but once the action starts it’s nonstop. The movie is a couple of minutes over 2 hours but it feels more like an hour. Again, it starts off a little slow but once it kicks into gear it’s a constant thrill ride.
One of the reasons this movie received so much attention when it came out is that a lot of top Korean actors are in it even though many of them are just playing small parts where they’re more or less just there so that their characters can be killed. I don’t know how they managed to get so many A listers to agree to that but I must have recognized at least 20 members of the cast from other Korean movies or series that I’ve watched.
This certainly isn’t the most original movie in the world but it is kind of unique in the way that it manages to blend a bunch of different genres together. And it certainly has many unique kills if you’re talking about the ways that people are sliced and diced in this thing. Even though it feels more like an action movie than a slasher flick it still has at least ten times more violence than your average slasher movie. Easily. They should’ve just called it Bloodbath.
