HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: WARRANT’S DOG EAT DOG

by Michael McCarthy

32 years ago today Warrant released their third album, Dog Eat Dog. It just so happens to be one of my top five albums of all-time.

What are they?
1. Butch Walker – Letters
2. Motley Crue – Shout At The Devil
3. Warrant – Dog Eat Dog
4. Bon Jovi – These Days
5. Mylene Farmer – Anamorphosee

And if I were to continue…

6. Paola & Chiara – Television
7. Enuff Z’Nuff – Strength
8. Vanessa Paradis – Bliss
9. Garbage – Version 2.0
10. Mylene Farmer – Innamoramento

Of course, if you asked me tomorrow, they might be in a slightly different order but those are my top 10 favorite albums of all-time

Anyway, Dog Eat Dog was a much darker Warrant. And much more diverse. The album did have its raunchy songs like “Machine Gun” and “Hole In My Wall” but it also had very thought-provoking songs like “Andy Warhol Was Right” and the prophetic “April 2031.” Then there’s the somewhat proggy ballad “The Bitter Pill,” which calls to mind Queen and even has a choir singing in German at one point. Probably my favorite ballad of all-time. But if you like traditional ballads “Let It Rain” is as moving as ballads get. You could say that the album was emotionally all over the map but at the same time the songs fit together perfectly. Even the speed metal song “Inside Out” seems entirely at home here, not sticking out like a sore thumb in the least.

For me, Dog Eat Dog is more than an album you listen to. It’s an album you experience.
