ANGUS & JULIA STONE TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM PRODUCED BY RICK RUBIN
Fans of Aungus & Julia Stone’s music together have big reason to rejoice today, as it’s just been announced that they have reunited for a brand new, full-length studio album produced by none other than Rick Rubin, which will be released August 1st of this year. That’s right, one of indie pop’s greatest duos ever have reunited for an album produced by one of music’s very best music producers ever!
The story behind the album, which will simply be called Angus & Julia Stone, is quite interesting. Both parties had gone off in their own directions with their solo work and they had no intention of ever making another album together. But Rick Rubin heard their music playing at a friend’s house and decided that he wanted to work with them, so he summoned them to LA. “We landed in LA and were looking at each other going, ‘What the fuck are we going to do?’” Angus jokes. “We had no idea how it would come together”. “It took a while to get to a place where we thought it was a good idea,” states Julia. “We were enjoying the time apart, enjoying our different directions. There was no conversation of, ‘When are we doing another Angus & Julia record?’ It never even came up.”
But even getting together with Rick Rubin failed to convince the two that they should do another album together, as they were each enjoying their successful solo careers. It was only after hanging out with Rubin for a period of months that they started to truly consider reuniting. “We decided that we would only move forward with the record if it felt real and it felt like the right thing.. I think this is what made the record what it is.” explains Angus. “We found a new way to make music together,” says Julia. “I think we had enough space from each other to be able to really listen to this time and appreciate each other’s ideas, thoughts and feelings.”
Ultimately, the new album became their most collaborative effort to date with the two writing together for the first time ever. They jammed with musicians, fleshing out brand new songs as well as working on tracks Angus had demoed at home in NYC and songs Julia had written whilst living in Venice Beach. Eventually during September 2013 they got together at Rubin’s Shangri La Studios in Malibu and made the new album. “We found a new way to make music together,” states Julia. “I think we had enough space from each other to be able to really listen to this time and appreciate each other’s ideas, thoughts and feelings.” “, I think we both felt the dust lift. We both felt empowered. The timing was unexpected but well placed” adds Angus.
Rubin has given the new album some of his highest praise ever, indicating that “Angus and Julia are truly unique musicians. They are authentic and pure people who do things from the heart. I’ve never worked with anyone like them before.”
