You never really know what Sky is going to do next. Initially, early singles like “One” and “Sex Rules” gave us the impression that she was going to be the new face of electro-pop. Then there was the single “Obsession,” which Sky herself often said she didn’t like. Or that she didn’t like parts of it. I liked it, but I could understand her complaints. She wanted to be doing truly artistic music and “Obsession” was more of a mainstream, NOW compilation-ready, pop nugget. But then her first EP, As If!, was released and featured more of the electro-pop we were hoping for. But she surprised us again with her next EP, Ghost, with songs that were more in the dream pop vein and less electro. The track from that EP that got the most attention was “Everything is Embarrassing,” which had something of an ’80’s pop vibe in terms of the beats, meanwhile the melody and vocals were almost chillwave. It may have been difficult to classify, but it topped an awful lot of critics best of 2012 lists, some even declaring it the song of the year. I thought it was great, but I’m not sure I’d go that far. My favorite track on Ghost was “Red Lips,” which was written by Shirley Manson and Greg Kurstin, the latter of which produced the track. It was a sexy, slick pop number of the infectious variety.
Now Sky is gearing up to release her debut, full-length album — Night Time, My Time — out 10.29.13 and she’s just unleashed the first video and single, “You’re Not The One.” And, once again, she’s surprised us. It does have something of an electro vibe, calling to mind some of Sky’s earlier work, but it’s also got a post grunge, almost garage rock vibe, too, the track being very guitar-centric. If I had to categorize it, I’d call it electro-rock. It’s not as immediately accessible as her earlier singles, taking a few listens to fully process, but it’s definitely worth taking the time to let it grow on you as it’s actually quite good once you’ve wrapped your head around it.
