“Video Girl” is one of our favorite tracks from FKA twigs debut album, LP1. It’s a mesmerizing delight akin to Massive Attack at their best. People have described her sound as R&B but here at Love is Pop we all agree that it’s more like trip hop. We’re not going to argue about it though. There’s something more to discuss: the strange and sure to be controversial video for the song. (But don’t read any further until after you watch the video if you don’t like SPOILERS!) In it, we see a prisoner being administered the death penalty. First, FKA twigs is in the viewing room, the only person watching the execution, but during the second half of the video she sees herself inside of the execution room. One version of herself would seem to be some sort of Egyptian goddess, or her version of the angel of death, and it’s a bit disturbing. But the other version is pure sex, dancing around the room provocatively and eventually straddling the guy who’s being executed right there on the execution table, which is somehow even more perturbing. Suffice to say that it’s very intense viewing that’s sure to linger in your mind for a day or two after you watch it, maybe even longer. But we do highly suggest that you watch it anyway because it’s one of the best and most thought-provoking music videos we’ve seen all year.
