There have been a lot of original Christmas songs released this year. To that end, my annual Christmix playlist has 14 originals this year, the other 7 tracks being covers but mostly covers of songs I was previously unfamiliar with. Well, here’s another Christmas original, “Christmas It’s Almost Here” by Richard Tyler Epperson, and it’s easily one of the year’s best new Christmas tunes, just bursting with holiday cheer but in a somewhat laid back manner, not completely over-the-top like some of this year’s new Christmas songs. If you like singer/songwriter stuff, this one will probably be your favorite new Christmas song of the year. I think what I like most about it is how it manages to sound original yet classic. When you listen to it, you feel like you’re listening to a new Christmas song, but you also feel like you’re listening to one you’ve known for years. You can’t say that about most of this year’s new Christmas songs, which tend to feel more like modern pop songs than songs that you’ve known your whole life.
