#review: MOTLEY CRUE: “FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT (TO PARTY)

by Michael McCarthy

Motley Crue really want to end their career, eh? As if their last single “Dogs of War” wasn’t awful enough, they’ve just followed it up with a terrible cover of The Beastie Boys’ “Fight For Your Right To Party.” The biggest problem I have with it is the guitars. They’re such idiots for firing Mick Mars. John 5 does not belong in Motley Crue. His style is Rob Zombie or Marilyn Manson. Now, if he tried to bring a Manson sound to Motley, that might have potential, but instead what he’s done with Motley mostly makes it sound like he’s trying to turn them into Korn and that is just horrendous. No offense to Korn fans — I like some of their stuff. But that guitar sound just doesn’t go with Vince Neil’s vocals at all.

Also, when Warrant toured with Trixter and FireHouse on their first headlining tour, all three bands came out together and covered “Fight For Your Right To Party” and their version was awesome. I’ve always wished that they would’ve done that in the studio. It rocked and it was also very joyous and fun. Motley’s version is just blah. And they’re not even the first band from their genre to do it.

To be perfectly honest, I’ll be seeing Motley Crue at Mohegan Sun on August 31st but I really have no idea what to expect. They’ve always been one of my favorite bands, so I felt compelled to buy a ticket. Especially since I wasn’t able to attend The Stadium Tour for health reasons. But I really have no idea if I’m going to be able to get absorbed by this concert and have a good time or if I’m going to be cringing all night. I realize I could go on Youtube right now and find videos of their recent performances with John 5 doing the classics but I’m afraid I’d be too frustrated with what I’d hear that I wouldn’t even end up going to the show. So for now I’m just going to hope they at least do the classics faithfully and that it’s a good show. We shall see.
