I’ve never been a big Disturbed fan, if I’m being entirely honest, but I’m moved by their version of the classic “The Sound of Silence,” originally by Simon & Garfunkel. It’s an interesting take because usually when metal bands cover the song, they have the electric guitars kick in at the point where the song grows more intense and it just gets louder from there with pummeling drums and such. In this version, they add some percussion and acoustic guitars, but it’s the powerful strings that make it sound overwhelmingly ominous. And, of course, vocalist David Draiman’s voice changes as the song goes on. He starts off singing it with a very clean, almost jazz vocal, but as the song goes on he eventually shifts into a very raw vocal with a gritty, sandpaper tone. I don’t know if he’s ever done songs like this with Disturbed in the past, but I’m mighty impressed with his performance here and I’m going to go check out the latest album by Disturbed after hearing this.
