“There’s nothing we can do to replace it,” goes POP ETC’s new single “Running In Circles,” but it’s obvious that they’re not talking about pop music. Because, well, “Running In Circles” does a great job of replacing whatever pop song was looping through your head before you heard it. Sure, you can try to hold onto that song, but it’s going to push it to the back of your mind and tickle your pleasure sensor as soon as you hear it. It’s just that damn good, a sweet, slick number that takes the best bits out of ’80’s pop and modern rock and meshes them into a sugary concoction that goes down as smoothly as your favorite ice cream. The verses are pure pop bliss and plenty seductive, but it’s when it hits the chorus and springs into jumpy pop rock mode that it really hooks you and makes you pledge your allegiance to the Brooklyn-via-Berkeley trio. And then you’ll want more, so it’s a good thing they’re currently in the studio, presumably working on a follow up to their 2012 debut, which was produced by Danger Mouse and Andrew Dawson. So, if you can’t wait for the new album, go hunt down the debut. You won’t regret it.
