REVIEW: RIHWA & MICHELLE BRANCH: GOOD LOVE

Japanese singer/songwriter Rihwa teamed up with American singer/songwriter Michelle Branch for this lovely duet, which Branch wrote after asking Rihwa if she’d be interested in collaborating, something Rihwa became extremely excited about, having become a fan of Michelle’s music when she was attending school in Canada.  The mid-tempo, guitar-centric track is entirely in English, but it was hardly Rihwa’s first time singing in English, as she actually used to sing Michelle’s “All You Wanted” in her vocal training class.

At first I thought that Michelle sang the first verse, then they sang the chorus together, and then Rihwa sang lead on the following verse.  But the more I listen to it, the more I’m becoming convinced that they’re trading lines throughout most of the song.  Which just goes to show you how similar their voices are, and how very well they mesh together.  You’d never know they recorded their parts separately in Los Angeles and Japan.

“Good love can be so hard, but you stick it out, work it out, hit the ground running, and you don’t give up until you find that good, good love,” goes the chorus, during which the girls harmonize beautifully.  It’s a perfect mix of modern country and pop rock.  “You’ve got to fall before you learn to fly,” they sing during one of the verses and I have a feeling this one is going to soar on both the American and Japanese charts. (It’s now available on iTunes worldwide.)
